Make blurry photos sharp — recover lost detail

There is more than one kind of blur, and each needs different handling: camera shake smears the image along one direction, missed focus spreads every point into a disc, and a blurry re-shoot is usually both of those plus phone compression. Working out which you have is the first job — the treatments differ completely, and the wrong one not only fails to help but amplifies noise along the way.

What "sharpening" actually does

Here is the thing most tools will not say: past a certain point the detail is not hidden, it is gone. Any sharpening then consists of the model inferring, from the very many photographs it has seen, what is most likely to have been in that spot, and painting it there.

That is not a flaw as long as you know it is happening. The test is homely enough: whatever you can roughly identify by squinting, the model tends to reconstruct accurately; whatever you genuinely cannot make out, it is inventing — attractively, but not necessarily as it was. Faces deserve particular care: a face too blurred to read will come back sharp, plausible, and possibly not theirs.

  • Outlines intact, merely soft → best case, essentially genuine recovery
  • Features locatable, detail gone → good results, reconstruction with real evidence behind it
  • Only a human shape left → you will get a sharp face, but likeness cannot be promised; use with care
  • Text in frame (signs, banners) → blurred lettering is the easiest thing to get wrong, so proofread the result

Four steps to sharpen a blurry photo

    First ask whether this step can be redone

    If the blurry file is a copy and you still have the print, re-shooting beats any algorithm by a wide margin. Flatten the print, take it to a window, brace your hands, tap the face to set focus — thirty seconds that may solve the problem outright.

    Upload the original file, not a forwarded copy

    Chat apps recompress at every hop and each one adds damage. Find the original in your camera roll, or export straight from the camera or scanner. Bigger and more original is better.

    Tick "sharper", and anything else that applies

    This page preselects it for you. Old photos are often yellowed and scratched as well — tick those too and it all runs in one pass. If you know what caused the blur, say so in the notes ("my hands shook").

    When comparing, look hard at faces and text

    Work through the slider with two priorities: does the face still look like them, and has any lettering been turned into different words. Those are also where over-sharpening shows first. Then download, or order a print — for size, follow the rule above: the more detail was reconstructed, the smaller you should print.

Why we would rather under-do it

Over-sharpening has a very specific look: a fine, even texture creeps across the skin so it reads as plastic or rubber, and dark outlines appear around the eyes that were never there. On screen it can pass for "nice and clear"; printed, something is visibly wrong — and a print cannot be undone. So the default is the setting we consider safest: better to leave a little of the original softness than to hand over a face sharpened into fiction. If you want more, you can always run it again.

Common questions

Can a photo blurred by a phone be fixed?

Yes. Camera shake and missed focus are different kinds of blur and are identified before treatment. For severe blur the result is a plausible reconstruction rather than the original detail — we will not pretend otherwise.

How much sharper can it get?

It depends how much information the original still holds. A photo where features are recognisable usually improves clearly; one where the person cannot be identified is guesswork for any tool. A simple test: whatever you can roughly make out by squinting, the model can usually reconstruct well; whatever you cannot identify at all, it is inventing.

Could it be overdone and look fake?

We stay deliberately conservative. Over-sharpening covers a face in fine even texture and makes it look plastic — worse than the blur, and irreversible once printed. Judge for yourself with the slider and run again if you want more, but the first pass is the setting we consider safest.

Can a small, low-resolution image be enlarged?

It can look better, but enlarging and sharpening are different things. Blowing a 300×400 image up to 8 inch means the missing pixels are supplied by the model — plausible detail, not real detail. If you plan to print, a safe rule is that the more detail was reconstructed, the smaller you should print: the same image holds up better at 6 inch than at 8.

What about motion blur, where the subject was moving?

Harder than camera shake. Shake smears the whole frame in one consistent direction; a moving subject is blurred while the background is sharp, and different limbs move in different directions at different speeds. Mild cases improve; severe ones — an arm swept into a ghost — do not come back.

Why do my copies of old photos always come out soft?

Usually three things at once: the phone focused on the sheen of the paper rather than the image, low light forced a slow shutter and introduced shake, and a slight curl put the edges out of focus. Fix all three by flattening the print, working by a window in daylight, bracing your hands on the table, and tapping the face in the middle to focus before shooting.

Is blur the same as compression artefacts?

No. Blur flattens detail; compression breaks the image into blocks with coloured speckles — most visible in an image forwarded through chat apps many times. Both improve, but compression damage is harder to clean convincingly, so track down the original file rather than the much-forwarded copy.

How large can I print after sharpening?

As a rule of thumb: mildly soft originals print fine at 8 inch; images where much of the detail was reconstructed are safer at 6 inch — the smaller the print, the more pixels per inch and the more solid it looks. When in doubt, print 6 inch first; it costs very little to check.
