Colour photos from the eighties and nineties are almost always off today: an overall yellow cast, reddish faces, a washed-out grey sky. That is not bad photography — the dyes in the paper fade at different rates. The key is working out what the colours originally were, not simply subtracting yellow.
Why photos yellow: three dyes, three lifespans
Colour paper does not hold colours; it holds three dye layers — cyan, magenta and yellow — that combine in varying proportion to make every colour in the picture. The trouble is that their durability differs enormously. Cyan is the most sensitive to light and humidity and generally fades first; yellow is the most stubborn and is often still largely present decades on.
- Cyan retreats first → the reds and yellows it used to balance are left unopposed → the whole image drifts warm
- Magenta sits in between → while cyan is gone but magenta remains, the photo reads distinctly red (classic 1980s print)
- Yellow lasts longest → late on, yellow dominates, giving the familiar "yellowed old photo"
- Skies give the age away first → blue needs plenty of cyan, so as cyan goes the sky turns pale grey
Knowing the mechanism has a practical payoff: the degree and direction of the cast tell us roughly what the original balance must have been, so correction is a reasoned reconstruction rather than arbitrary adjustment.
Why one-click de-yellowing often makes things worse
One-click de-yellow tools are everywhere, and nearly all of them simply pull down the yellow channel. That just about works on a uniformly cast image, but the moment the scene genuinely contains something yellow it breaks — the tool cannot tell fading from fact.

So the work here begins by deciding, region by region, which yellow came from dye loss and which was in the room at the time, and correcting each accordingly. That extra step is exactly the difference between a result that looks like a good photograph and one that looks grey.
Four steps to fix a yellowed photo

Find the most original copy
If you have both the print and an old scan, re-scan or re-shoot the print. Old scans have often already been through some era-appropriate "auto enhance", and that pass usually cost the faint tonal detail we most want back.

Copy it under even light
Daylight, no flash, square-on and filling the frame. Uneven lighting is the biggest confounder for this particular job: with one side brighter than the other, it is genuinely hard to tell a cast from a shadow. Use a scanner if you have one, at 300 dpi or above.

Upload, and add a note if you can
"Fix yellowing/fading" is preselected. Any colour you are certain of is worth writing down — "that wall was white", for instance, hands over a white-balance reference point, which beats any automatic guess. Tick "sharper" as well if fading is severe.

Compare, then print
Use the slider and check three things in particular: skin has not gone grey, whites are genuinely white, and warm lighting has not been neutralised. Then download the full-resolution file or order a print — a new print will not repeat the same fade.

Since light, humidity and heat drive the process, the defences follow: keep prints out of direct sun, out of damp cupboards and away from heat. When framing, use acid-free board and leave a small gap so the print does not sit against the glass. The most reliable measure, though, is simply this — scan it, and print a fresh copy. Store the original safely and display the new print.
Common questions
Why do old photos turn yellow overall?
Colour paper builds every colour from three dyes — cyan, magenta and yellow — and they last very differently. Cyan is the least stable and goes first; yellow is the most durable. Over decades cyan retreats, magenta and yellow remain, and the whole image drifts warm. It is chemistry, not bad photography or careless storage — a photo in a drawer yellows too, just more slowly.
Can it just remove the yellow and leave everything else?
It can, but it usually should not stop there. Subtracting yellow globally is the obvious approach and the easiest to get wrong: skin that should look warm is dragged grey, wooden furniture turns a flat brown, and warm lamplight goes cold. The right approach is to tell fading-induced yellow apart from yellow that genuinely belongs in the scene, then treat each separately.
The photo has faded almost to nothing — is it salvageable?
Worth trying. Severely faded photos have usually lost contrast and detail as well, so tick "sharper" too. Set expectations though: how much comes back depends on how much information remains, and for an image reduced to bare outlines any tool is producing a plausible reconstruction rather than the original.
Are reddish and yellowish casts the same problem?
Same cause, different stage. Once cyan is gone, a magenta-dominant image reads red (typical of 1980s prints) and a yellow-dominant one reads yellow. It is one and the same pass — you do not need to work out which you have, just tick "fix yellowing/fading".
Black-and-white photos yellow too — same thing?
Yes, use this. Yellowing on black-and-white paper usually comes from incomplete fixing or damp, showing as an overall yellow-brown tone, and it cleans back to neutral black-and-white. If you want it in colour instead, that is a different page — colorizing.
Will the result look over-saturated, like a filter?
We deliberately stay conservative. Part of what makes an old photo appealing is its restraint, and pushing saturation to the limit reads as fake. The target is "a well-preserved photo from that year", not "a photo taken on a phone today".
Scan or phone photo — which works better?
A scan is usually better: even lighting and no perspective distortion. A phone copy is perfectly usable — just use daylight, no flash, and shoot square-on filling the frame.
Will the print yellow again?
We use genuine inks on professional photo paper, which in normal storage — out of direct light, away from damp — is far more stable than the print you have. For long-term display, mount with acid-free board and keep the print off the glass, and it is steadier still.
